Head and Neck Tumors: Management of Primary Undifferentiated Pleomorphic Sarcoma
Authors
Abstract:
Introduction: Sarcomas account for 1% of all tumors originated in the head and neck regions in adults. They constitute a heterogeneous group of tumors of mesenchymal origin with multiple histological variants. The undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS) subtype is the most frequent variant with an incidence range of 2.7-38%. Materials and Methods: This retrospective case series was conducted on 11 patients who were diagnosed with UPS and treated in our institution in the last 11 years. Results: According to the results, 26.8% of the sarcomas corresponded to UPS variant. Out of 11 patients, 5 cases were female. The median age of the participants was 58 years (range: 18-74 years). Seven and four patients were T1b and T2b, respectively. Ten patients had no metastasis at the moment of diagnosis. Six patients were categorized as intermediate-grade, and the remaining (n=5) were classified as high-grade. The most frequent location was the scalp (n=3). In the patients undergoing surgery, the mean follow-up duration was 52 months. Disease-free survival (DFS) rates were obtained at 70%, 50%, and 50% in the 1st, 3rd, and 5th years, respectively, with the mean DFS of 36 months. In addition, the overall survival rates in the 1st, 3rd, and 5th years were 100%, 100%, and 83%, respectively. Conclusion: TheUPS represented the most common histological subtype in our series. They tend to be intermediate or high-grade tumors. An acceptable global survival rate justifies surgical treatment as the main therapeutic tool.

Dear Editor, By definition, sarcomas are malignant tumors of tissues, derived from mesoderm and involve the oncogenic transformation of mesenchymal stem cells. The two main types of sarcoma are bone and soft tissue sarcomas. Soft tissue sarcomas generally manifest as deep lesions, but they may affect the skin and subcutaneous tissue.1 They are grouped according to similarities in their clinical...

Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma very rarely affect the neck. We report a case of a 62year old man who presented with a right sided skin lump which he noticed after sustaining a neck contusion in a road traffic accident about one year ago. The initial CT and ultrasound scans of the lump were suggestive of a thrombosed varix. Clinical examination showed a hard skin nodule with signs of tethe...

Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS), previously known as malignant fibrous histiocytoma, occurs commonly in the soft tissues in adult, but is rare in the maxillofacial region. It consists of undifferentiated mesenchymal tumor cells resembling histiocytes and fibroblasts. The purpose of this article is to report a case of UPS in the mandible. A 44-year-old patient presented with a painful...

RATIONALE Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma is extremely rare in the head and neck area, and the aggressive nature of this tumor has not been previously described. PATIENT CONCERNS Therefore, we report a unique case of a very rapidly growing primary undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma in the eyelid. A 67-year-old woman presented with a left lower lid mass. She had no previous history of s...

Primary penile sarcoma is an extremely rare condition. The incidence of penile sarcoma is described as 0.6 to 1 out of 100,000 patients in developed countries, and leiomyosarcoma is the predominant histological type. Given such a low incidence, treatment for this condition is very controversial. The authors could not find in the literature any other case of penile sarcoma with such histological...
